Have you ever had someone in your life tell you that you’re not good enough or that, “you’re never gonna be able to do that!”? Unfortunately, most of us have:(
These people are what I call DREAM CRUSHERS. They may be family, coworkers, or they may even claim to be your friends. They like to lurk around corners and say sarcastic remarks to put you down all while telling you they are trying to help or protect you or they may just laugh it off and say, “oh I’m just joking with you.” There’s a BIG difference between constructive criticism and a put down, and dream crushers like to try to disguise their slams, so beware.
I can proudly say I have confronted or gotten rid of almost all of my dream crushers. To get rid of them I had to recognize them first, which isn’t always easy. In fact, it can be down right hard because they try to hide behind the masks of supportive people.
Notice I said, “ almost all of my dream crushers.” Yes, there’s a certain type of crusher that is a little hard to get ride of. Yup, I’m talking about family. Unfortunately, you can't always get rid of family. lol! So, what the hell are you supposed to do?! It’s different for everybody some people move away and ignore it, others may just call or visit less. For me I try to just take what they say with a grain of salt and realize they are just expressing their own unhappiness buy trying to keep me down. I try to lead by example and hope that I can show them how to be happy:D
Right now I have positivity all around me and it feels f#©kin great! WooHoo! My friends and I support each other with positivity and constructive criticism. I can't go into this industry thinking that I know everything, because I don't. I can't be an artist thinking I am the best, because I'm not, yet;) hehehe. But, I am a person who gives it my ALL and if that isn't good enough for someone else, that's not my problem! All I can do is be me.
Recognize your dream crushers and either confront them or (this may be hard to hear) STOP HANGING AROUND THEM! They want you to stay where they are, they don't want you to leave them behind. You should know that your not leaving them behind, you’re growing, and if they want to do the same then they will still be in your life.
One of my favorite quotes says it perfectly.
“Nature is very simple, if you're not growing, you're dying.
If a plant is not growing, it is dying. Once you stop learning, you start dying.”
